The Big Plastic Count

Plastic waste has become a BIG issue for people living all over the world! Nearly 100 billion pieces of plastic packaging are thrown away every year in the UK alone, and 88% of waste is not recycled. But you can help make a difference and encourage change on a much larger scale.

After the success of the Global Ocean Treaty, Greenpeace UK and Everyday Plastic is inspiring to change history once again with the Global Plastics Treaty.

This treaty aims to put pressure on World Governments’ and big corporations to:

  1. Cut global plastic production by at least 75% by 2040.
  2. End single-use plastics and the devastation caused to the natural world, as well as human health.
  3. Move us towards an economy focused on re-use of materials, so packaging can be kept in circulation and out of the environment.

How can YOU get involved?

During the week of the 11th – 17th of March 2024, all UK residents are invited to sign up to The Big Plastics Count.

You receive a pack containing everything you need, either via post or digital copy. It’s simple! Just tally every piece of plastic packaging you throw away and indicate which type of plastic it was.

There is even have an easy to use plastic ID tool if you aren’t sure what to tally where.

Submit your results by the 31st of March, online or using the QR code on your sheet, and wait to receive your individual or household plastics footprint.

What happens next?

The data gathered helps create a picture about how much plastic the UK uses.

The more people who sign up to The Big Plastic Count, the more pressure is placed on the government to agree to the terms of the Global Plastics treaty.

Let’s make a difference!
