Job Description for Waste Awareness, Communications & Education Manager

Main purpose and scope of job

All employees to take care for their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their acts or omissions. Additionally, employees must also co-operate with the company to enable it to discharge its own responsibilities successfully.
To raise public awareness in Buckinghamshire of the waste hierarchy (e.g. waste prevention, re-use, recycling and composting) and associated benefits and issues, through the creation of new, and support of existing educational initiatives and communication channels with a wide range of community and school groups.
Analyse data captured by the contract to produce reports and identify areas for improvement with the aim of improving recycling and waste management performance.
The role is a key part of the Household Recycling Centre Contract which FCC Environment operates in partnership with Buckinghamshire Council.

Duties and key responsibilities - SHEQ

• Responsible for their personal safety and that of all personnel under his or her authority, including others who may be affected by the company’s activities. In particular:
• Carry out assigned tasks and duties in a safe manner, in accordance with instructions, and to comply with safety rules/procedures, regulations and codes of practice.
• If aware of any unsafe practice or condition, or if in any doubt about the safety of any situation, consult their supervisor.
• Obtain and use the correct tools/equipment for the work and not to use any that are unsafe or damaged. All tools, equipment and personal protective equipment must be stored in the approved place after use.
• Ensure that all guards are securely fixed and that all safety equipment and personal protective clothing/equipment provided are used.
• Not to operate any plant or equipment unless authorised.
• To report any accident, near-miss, dangerous occurrence or dangerous condition to their line management.
• To switch off and secure unattended plant or equipment.
• To avoid improvised arrangements and suggest safe ways of eliminating hazards.
• Not to participate in horseplay or place fellow employees in danger by their actions.
• Adopt a proactive manner to energy usage and suggest ways of improving energy performance.
• Promote health and safety by engaging with staff and visitors on safety
• Set a personal example with regard to health & safety and environment matters.
• Encourage H&S reporting by leading by example and support any H&S initiatives implemented

Duties and key responsibilities - Operational

• To be responsible for the development and implementation of waste hierarchy education and communication initiatives aimed at specific target audiences, including the production of presentational material and resources.
• To develop National Curriculum based educational resources linked to the Household Recycling Centres (HRCs) and other waste management facilities available, as well as to promote the waste hierarchy as a whole.
• To receive and make welcome visitors to the HRCs and impart information using a full range of presentational techniques and visual aids.
• To be responsible for promoting recycling at the HRCs across the county, including visiting schools and other organisations, and organising a usage programme to maximise the number of days that the facility is visited and used.
• To liaise and develop close links with Buckinghamshire Council, as well as other stakeholders e.g. the four waste collection authorities, local community groups and schools to incorporate their requirements into the waste education and facility usage programme.
• To produce reports on the programme and initiatives as necessary in line with the contract requirements.
• Analyse the contract data in order to produce reports on various key performance indicators for e.g. recycling performance
• Report on areas of improvement that have been identified as a result of data analysis
• Produce reports/ presentations on operational performance that are suitable for the target audience including contract staff, management or others
• Produce a monthly contract newsletter which details contract performance from the month prior and important information
• Attend conferences or other public events as required to promote recycling
• Support the Client with requests that they may have
• To produce work within time and financial targets.
• To undertake both internal and external training and attend briefing sessions associated with the post as necessary. This will include ad-hoc and induction training as well as working within a personal development plan.
• To understand and comply with the company’s equal opportunities policy and take positive action to ensure that services are available to all.
• To comply with all health & safety policies and relevant legislation in the performance of the duties of the post.
• To give due regard to the company’s environmental policies.
• To carry out other reasonable duties within the overall function, commensurate with the grading and level of responsibility of the job.
• To produce professional social media posts and other promotional communications for the contract and externally, supporting the contract and the Client
• Any other reasonable request

Experience

• A minimum of 2 years’ experience working in either an environmental or waste management or educational discipline
• Experience and confidence in working with schools or school age children
• Experience in public communications
• Experience in analysing data

Essential Knowledge

•Satisfactory completion of the relevant Competency Management System modules.
• Completion of all other training as defined within the Training Matrix.
• A good understanding of environmental and waste issues and a genuine commitment to waste reduction. An understanding of the need for a sustainable approach to waste management, as well as a desire to encourage others to use resources more sustainably.
• A sound knowledge of waste minimisation / composting / recycling methods and systems. A basic knowledge of pertinent European / national / local legislation, strategic aims and targets.
• A degree or equivalent in environmental sciences, teaching or related subjects
• Must be adept in the use of the Microsoft Software package
• Must be adept at using Microsoft Excel and have a good understanding of formulas and their application

Personal attributes and other requirements

• Excellent communication skills, both written and oral
• Ability to work with and lead groups to achieve positive outcomes
• Experienced IT user, including ability to use word processing, spreadsheet and presentation software, as well as social media experience
• Ability to organise and manage own workload and work in a largely self-directed manner
• Ability to work as part of a team and develop good working relationships with all partners
• Willingness to learn new skills
The successful candidate will be required to undertake a DBS check and the contract agreement will be contingent on DBS clearance.
A full UK driving licence is required as this position requires travel across Buckinghamshire.
