Wave goodbye to waste

Summer holidays are upon us. Your bags are packed, your out of office is ON, but is the fridge still half full? Cucumbers, cheese, a bag of leaves... don’t leave them home alone.
Research commissioned by Hubbub shows that the UK throws away £½ billion worth of edible food when heading off on holiday each year, and £12 million worth of food ends up in the bin in the first week of the summer holiday alone.
Our latest food waste campaign, #TravellersCheck, is here to help you save to food waste by adding three simple steps to your travel planning: 1) freeze, 2) gift or 3) cook before going away.
1) CHECK IN WITH YOUR FREEZER
Going on holiday and in a flummox over freezing? Don't worry. Here are facts about freezing that everyone should know.
2) CHECK IN WITH YOUR NEIGHBOURS
81% of us would be happy to receive food from a neighbour. Download a food sharing app (like Olio or TooGoodToGo) to connect with your community and local retailers. Certain food can be shared at a community fridge so have a look at the map and see if there’s a fridge near you.
3) MAKE YOURSELF A LUNCHBOX, OR COOK AND FREEZE A HOMECOMING MEAL
Take a tasty meal on the road or consider cooking yourself a homecoming meal. Try our favourite Food Savvy recipes to use up any odds and ends in the fridge, then pop in the freezer. Or why not Try Kitche - it's an app to help you use the food you buy but there are also 1,000s of recipes too.
So remember, three simple steps – freeze, cook or gift - are all you need to tackle food waste and save cash this summer.
Passport? Check. Bags packed? Check. Food Waste? #TravellersCheck.
