Non-recyclable waste

In Buckinghamshire, over 50% of the waste we produce is re-used, recycled or composted, but we still need to dispose of what is left. Waste that cannot be recycled is no longer sent to landfill, it now goes to Greatmoor Energy from Waste Facility, in the north of the county. It burns the waste to generate electricity, enough for 40,000 homes and will save local taxpayers at least £150million over the next 30 years. Non-recyclable waste is collected from homes across the County and at the nine household recycling centres.

There are still things in the general rubbish bin that could have been recycled so we will continue to encourage residents to recycle more. The education manager at Greatmoor visits schools and community groups to explain about waste reduction and how the facility works. You can also visit Greatmoor and see how we turn waste into electricity. However, there will always be a need for some disposal and generating electricity from it is better than sending it to landfill.

If you would like to find out more about Greatmoor or book a visit for yourself, a community group or local school, visit www.greatmoor.co.uk.

Did you know Using Greatmoor means we now send less than 0.1% of our waste to landfill, one of the best rates in the Country.

Buckinghamshire - Greatmoor is north of Aylesbury so all of this waste is kept inside Buckinghamshire.

100,000 tonnes of waste is sent to Greatmoor each year from homes in Buckinghamshire.

You can see the live information from the facility including electricity generated, waste processed and visits on the Greatmoor in numbers webpage. Buckinghamshire Council also update this infographic every year showing cast savings and key highlights of the Energy from Waste contract.
