Why recycle food waste?

A lot of carbon emissions are used to grow, process, transport, refrigerate and cook food, which all goes to waste if it's not eaten. In fact, if food waste were a country, it would be the third biggest emitter of carbon emissions in the world. So the best thing we can do with our food is enjoy it. But, if it can’t be eaten and enjoyed, then the next best thing we can do is recycle it.

Cost - Around 28,000 tonnes of food waste is put in rubbish bins in Buckinghamshire, that's around 2kgs from the average home, every week. All of that could have been recycled, and would have saved around £600,000 of disposal costs. By recycling food, you will be helping to save money that could be spent on other essential services.

Green energy - When food is recycled separately at the kerbside, it is transformed into energy and fertiliser. One of the Anaerobic Digestion facility in Buckinghamshire can produce enough energy to power 12,000 homes. Did you know, recycling just six tea bags will generate enough energy to boil a kettle to make another cuppa!

Weekly collections - Buckinghamshire has a weekly recycling service for food waste. So it's collected twice as often as the general rubbish, making it easier to keep your rubbish smelling nice, or, not so stinky at least.
